So what happens when the owner of the news clip, which you posted about Obama visiting Hawaii, sees it here and get's pissed that you posted material to which he owns the copyright? He files a complaint to SMFforFree who has 5 days to contact you and find out why you posted it and then file an appeal. Five days isn't long enough. So chances are SMFforFree is removed from the US DNS servers and anyone trying to access ANY SMFforFree site will not get anywhere.
Do you think they'll think kindly of you for that? Chances are they'll drop you in a heartbeat the minute the complaint is issued and then work out a deal with the copyright holder.
Ludicrous? No. It's been happening for years with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) of 1998.
And the whole $#!+ of it - like the DMCA act - it WON'T do a freaking thing to stop copyright infringement. Torrent sites exist to this day ala Napster and Kazaa and are untouchable by the US, and SOPA won't do a thing to stop them. The hacks and phreaks know the work-arounds to get to the sites, be it the actual IP address or how to use proxys to sneak in using foreign DNS servers.
Mel Watt and Lamar Smith are simply **** politicians that don't have a freaking clue.
I don't have a problem with protecting copyrights - but I do have a problem with stupid laws that idiots push pretending a fix.
Right on Sean! That was my understanding of SOPA as well...completely ludicrous!
